Questions

Frequently asked

How does booking work?

Send the inquiry form with a date in mind and I’ll reply within 24 hours. A signed contract and a 20% retainer hold the slot; the balance is due 7 days before, paid through the Client Portal.

How will you know when it’s happening?

We agree on one signal beforehand — a hand in a pocket, a cap taken off, whatever you’ll actually remember once your heart is going. That is the only thing you have to carry with you. Until you give it I’m a stranger photographing the bridge, which is what everyone else standing there is doing.

How do you stay hidden?

I work long, from thirty or forty metres, dressed like everyone else on the trail. Nobody has spotted me before the signal yet — the camera reads as one more visitor photographing the view.

Where do these work best?

Baker Beach with the bridge behind you, the Lands End labyrinth, the Palace of Fine Arts colonnade, or the Sutro Baths at low tide. Each has one hour a day when it is right, and I’ll tell you which. Then I walk that spot at that hour on a different day and find the angle that puts the view behind you and no tour group in it, so what reaches you is a map with an X on it and nothing else to remember.

What if the fog rolls in?

San Francisco fog is a look, not a problem — it softens everything and empties the viewpoints. If the weather is genuinely unworkable we move to the backup date we set when you booked, at no cost.

Do we get portraits afterwards?

Yes, and I’ll push for it. Once the shock passes we take twenty minutes of real portraits nearby — it is the only day you will ever be photographed like this, and the ring is still new on the hand.

How fast do we see them?

A handful of edited frames the same evening, so you have something to send the family that night. The full gallery follows within a week.

Tell Me the Plan

Send me the date, the place you had in mind, and how much of a surprise it needs to be. I’ll come back with the hour that works and where I’ll be standing.
